Self destruct
By AJ O’Brien
Beyond my blue dreams
beneath a heart laid bare,
the enemy whispers
Spike me if you dare.
The clock stands empty
gonna say goodbye,
taking Route 66
spread my wings and fly.
I am the needle
and it’s eating me,
ain’t fighting no more
what will be will be.
This road is so dark
and I can not see,
that every hit I take
Is slowly killing me.
My God. So beautiful.

Brilliant! Captures the ensnaring by temptation till it spirals out of control.

This poem is a triumph, Allan. It scared me until I read the resulting conversations.

I’ve heard the high is like flying as your amazing poem describes, and you’ve captured the insidious way drugs can tantalize and deceive. The imagery here is powerful, Alan—truly a self-destructive voyage that bewitches.
Merry Christmas to you, Alan! Enjoy your family; especially little Caeden. 🎄💝🎅🏼

I have a beloved, grown nephew who has battled drug addiction for years…I see him in every line of your poem. So, so sad. 😞
Great work, Alan.

Thank you Kaddie.
I’m sorry to hear about your nephew.
I actually wrote the poem for someone in the
same situation.

Nowadays, it seems like everyone has a friend or family member who is an addict, or recovering addict. Our poor world is messed up on so many levels.
On a happier note…
Wishing you and your loved ones a very merry Christmas, Alan, and a wonderful New Year. God bless you and hold you near, my friend. ☺️

Some people hurt inside more than others, and from there it’s a matter of intensity. The most intense need the strongest relief. I’m hoping the euphoria given by Sativa will sufficiently substitute for opiates.
