Compassion

Compassion
By AJ O’Brien

Never mock the lonely
bleed for those who have bled,
weep for the war torn
and always pray for the dead.

Cast aside the bigoted
feed the unfed,
plead with the suicidal
and remember the dead.

Abolish the stench of hatred
push the downtrodden ahead,
embrace the right to die
and always pray for the dead.

Never ever look away
reach out instead,
gather up that broken soul
and remember the dead.

As the darkness becomes heavy
and all has been said
forgive me my sins.
I am, one of the dead.

  1. Chilling – because what you say here is what we should do and what we should remember and that even though someone might be dead, their influence on our lives does not leave. If we do not learn we join the cacophony of voices. Well written.

  2. hey Alan, hope 2018 is being darkly gentle to you… haha. I miss reading your poetry. It is my type of poetry and really well written. I also don’t want to pressure you – I could message you every week asking for more, haha. Take care and I will learn to be patient.

  3. This poem scared the shit out of me, but then I read your comments and stopped worrying. The message of compassion, the powerful repeated last line in each stanza, and the hard-hitting closing line make this poem a triumph – surely one of your finest.

  4. This is a beautiful post, Alan. Perhaps my favorite of yours, much as I enjoy them all. The poem is interlaced with compassion. The words have resonated since I first came across it. When the darkness grows heavy, when loss overcomes us, we do feel deadened. But love sustains us. Have a Merry Christmas!

  5. I have always known you were a good writer, but honestly, this is one of your best. We are all one of the dead, which is why there is such a need for compassion and caring in this world. You have written the story of humanity, and written it well.

      1. I go by many names : DivaState, The Hurricane is my stupidly silly poetry alias, with a good reason. I intend to challenge my own reputation. My actual name is Luiza! Nice to meet you, dare to mention yours?

  6. Wow! It was worth the wait! I am hungry for more, so feed the unfed ahaha! I love how the poem is hopeful all along but at the end you get the twist : I am also covered by darkness and. sometimes I need being prayed to and fed! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘
