Just one minute man
By AJ O’Brien.
All set Mr. President,
I have a long way to fly
and when I arrive,
well you know the outcome
and so do I.
Clear skies lay ahead
let the darkness begin.
What you’re about to do,
not me,
Is a cardinal sin.
You’ve entered your code
so sit back and relax,
kick off your shoes
have a drink or two
while I tell you the facts.
I’m an LGM-30 Minuteman
Intercontinental ballistic missile
carrying three nuclear warheads,
and when I come down
I come down in style.
Payload 500 Kilotons
more than enough power
to destroy 50 Hiroshima’s,
and I shall be arriving
In just under one hour.
Cruising speed, 1500 mph
altitude 700 miles high
accuracy within 200 meters.
Bury your guilt
and kiss the dead goodbye.
Okay, target is dead ahead
given the final code to attack,
all warheads are fully armed
pray you’re doing the right thing,
there’s no turning back.
60 seconds to impact
coming down like a hammer from Hell,
30 seconds to impact
just enough time,
to sound the death knell.
Nuclear weapons are dangerous. I hope they are never used again.

All the nations want the nukes. They don’t get it. Let off a dozen and a half or so of these things and the entire atmosphere is contaminated. Then the radiation falls to the soil and water. The US could unilaterally disarm of nukes and still have enough conventional weapons to fight the world many times over .

Alan, what an interesting approach to a hot topic. I like that you personified the missile making it the narrator, a strong and powerful impact, really well done. ~ Mia

My apologies if I offended you Cathy. π§
I never normally get involved in politics. π

No offense taken, Alan. We are all entitled to our opinion, and to the freedom to express it. What bothers me is people who think their opinion should rule, and don’t want other opinions to even be heard. To me, those are the ones who are intolerant.
I rarely get involved in politics either; it’s too polarizing anymore.
Again, no offense taken. There’s nothing wrong with agreeing to disagree. π

I think because, as you said, Alan, he is NOT a politician. So many in the U. S. got fed up seeing politicians chipping away at our freedoms, and attempting to turn us into a socialist country, and taxing us to death to pay for it. And when it came down to the wire, a vote for Ms Clinton was a vote for more of the same. Trump IS NOT a politician, and that was his appeal.

Thank you so much Cathy for your comments.
I think Kim Jong is just an idiot, and doesn’t realise
that America can wipe North Korea off the face of the earth
In a matter of hours.
But I think Trump is an imbecile. He is not a politician.
He talks rubbish, and I think he is very very dangerous.
How the Hell did he ever become the most powerful man on earth?

Powerful for sure! Scary times, Alan, and it’s hard having Trump as the leader. But when I talk with my granddaughters just turning 11, I have hope for the future if we don’t do ourselves in before that.

Very powerful poem, Alan, and well-crafted.
I can’t help but wonder, though, why hardly any mention in the comments are made of Kim Jong-un. Just who started spouting off first here? That piss-ant dictator Kim Jong-un is like a bully on a playground in the ilk of Saddam Hussein, Muammar Gaddafi, Pol Pot, and yes, even Adolph Hitler (who some erroneously compare Trump to). And if one continues to back down to bullies out of fear of what they might do, terror-mongers will rule the world.
I don’t agree with everything Trump stands for, and I wish we’d had better choices in our presidential race, but sometimes, one has to pick the lesser of two evils.
I know I’ll probably get blasted for what I wrote, for there is a whole segment in society who can’t tolerate opposing views, and try to shout down any who dares express them; but it has been increasingly hard for me not to put in my two-cents worth because, heaven forbid, I might offend someone who doesn’t want to hear (refuses to hear) a differing opinion–though they think everyone should hear theirs.
Sorry for the rant, Alan. I’ll get off my soapbox now.

Usually, your imagination is enough to come up with frightening images. But in this case, you’re writing about a very real possibility. Nuclear weapons are absolute proof that just because we can build something doesn’t mean we should. Because the problem is, the heads of countries aren’t always rational people. And in the case of the current threats going back and forth, we are holding the fate of a whole lot of people in the hands of two egotistical maniacs.

Trump reminds me of the character Greg Stilton
in the Stephen King novel The Dead zone.
Deranged and very dangerous.

Truly one of your most frightful work, yet, Alan. It not only sounds the death knell, it also sounds like a scary possibility. Brilliant and horrific. I loved the POV as a ballistic missile. ππ±

I had to calm myself down before writing a response. I almost reached for the brandy.
I wish those evil things had never been invented, though in Hiroshima, there are those being born to this day, who may wish it more than you or I. Hiroshima and Nagasaki still ooze radiation.
You’ve hit the jackpot. this is an incredibly powerful poem – though not in the same way as that filthy nuclear missile you’ve showcased.

The choices that are made in voting booths proves that we’re surrounded by stupidity.
The fact that that bastard Trump still has supporters adds a dash of evil to the stupidity.
